AG’s report
The Short-term English House
AG

I took part in the Short-term English Camp again this year. Three things particularly impressed me about this training camp.

1. I was able to meet and converse with many students.
2. We stayed in cottages and cooked our own meals.
3. When we sang or played games, we did it in English.

I had a good time at the camp, and it made me think in particular:

1. Take a positive part in talking. Don’t wait for the other person
2. Whether you can do it or not, just try.
3. Make it clear what you want to say.
4. Make it as short as possible.
5. Find a way to say it using the words you know.

Finally, here are some things I noticed:

1. The basics are Japanese.
2. But you can improve your ability to change it into English.
3. And you can enrich your vocabulary.
4. You must have the desire to talk.
5. You must be willing to take the first step.
6. And you must make your own chances.

I wish I could have profited even more from this training camp.
 Thank you so much!

This lodge together was an unforgettable memory for us.

I have been studying English ever since primary school. So I can read and write, but I’m not so good at speaking in English. Normally I don’t have the chance to speak with other people in English. Especially now that I am studying abroad in Japan, I find I can speak Japanese better than English because I it’s the language I study in every day. I usually talk with my friends and teachers in Japanese.

I think the best way of studying a language is by speaking and communicating, and that’s why I took part in this training camp. In these three days we had a really good experience talking with each other in English. Also, even if we’re not so good at communicating with each other in English, we can still all enjoy a happy three days. It’s a secure and exciting feeling.

For the future, I have a strong motivation to study English. I will never forget the time we shared at the training camp.

I had such fun at the ESL camp – except for one thing. I had a duty for preparing supper on 26 March, when shrimp curry was on the menu. I failed miserably. The curry was no good because I put in too much water. But still, everyone told me “It tastes good”. That made me happy.

The campfire skit activity was a lot of fun. Everyone stood around the fire and put on games and quizzes. No one could guess the answers. It was great fun. We did a second round of quiz questions as well.

The memories of this ESL camp will always remain with me, especially because I was talking a lot of English in the ESL, and at this ESL camp we said a lot of things in English words, which is very useful for me.

I will participate in the ESL camp again next year.

The things we can gain by joining in ESL activities and the ESL training camp
NM

Here, I want to share my reflections on taking part in the ESL training camp. I participated in the ESL training camp with the single intention of enhancing my English skills. But now I feel that I gained not just one, but a whole lot of things. So I would like to share some of them with you.
I won’t want talk about what I got from the camping because the purpose of my trip was to enhance my English skills. I believe everyone achieved that.
Indeed, we were all able to pick up social and management skills such as teamwork, taking responsibilities, communication and presentation skills, time management and so on.
But on top of this, I do not think that anyone not interested in culture can study language. After all, language is one of the parts of culture. The sort of person who loves culture is the sort who loves the world, and who has a global way of thinking open to both the eastern thinking of the student participants and the western thinking of our native-speaking teachers. All of the people who took part in the ESL camp showed that they have a love for world culture and also a global way of thinking.
People like this are looking forward for you to join them when you participate in the ESL. Wouldn’t you be interested to take part in ESL activities, or in the next training camp? It will be a pleasure to welcome you to our ESL.
Nowadays it is vitally important to increase your language skills and to acquire social skills and the capacity for global thinking. So joining in activities at the ESL is a smart step and just the right thing to do. That is the message I meant to share with you in my choice of the title: “The things we can gain by joining in ESL activities and the ESL training camp”.

Reflections on the Short-term English House
SL

This was my second time to go on the short trip, so I felt much more comfortable than last year and found that it went better. It’s not only that I knew what we would be doing for the next activity, but also I was more confident with my English this time.
As a short trip, it’s good, because you get a good chance to be close to nature. For learning English, it’s great too.
If you like going on trips and also want to learn English, try coming next year!

Short-term English Camp Report
“What I felt about this English camp”
YN

This short-term English Camp was the second one I participated in. When I took part the first time, I learned the importance of talking positively even if I made a few mistakes in grammar. But the thing I learned this time was the complete opposite.

In this camp, I found that I could understand the contents of the English conversation, but I couldn’t come up with the words and grammar patterns that I needed for conversing myself. I keenly realized my need to learn English afresh. Because there are many words and patterns that I am striving to remember, I find I can’t launch out into the sentence I want to say when it comes to the point.

My original purpose in participating in this camp was to motivate myself for the TOEIC test. Judged from that purpose, this camp was very useful. I will now begin to learn up the words and grammar points that I wanted to know. And then I want to achieve my target score in the TOEIC test before the start of the summer vacation.

To sum it all up, I feel that in the last camp I learned the skill of communicating in conversational English, but that in this camp I was made to think more about my own intentions and purposes. I can make use not only of my knowledge of English but also of all kinds of other things. I found that I gained a very valuable experience from this camp.

I want to put more purpose into my study of English, without forgetting anything that I have learned in this camp.

This training camp was a very happy experience for me.

It was the second time I took part in the English House. On the first day I made the potato salad. I felt that it was very easy to make. After dinner, we went to the nearby observatory and looked at the movements of the stars. It was a good day, but in the night I could not sleep because I had problems with pollen allergy.

Over the whole three days, the activity that left the biggest impression on me was the balloon activity. I enjoyed learning English based on things drawn on balloons. On the fun side, the thin that appealed to me most was the campfire skit activity. I especially enjoyed the message game. The camp fire kept us warm.

Three days was long enough to allow us to get intimate with people, and it was a very good experience talking with the international and junior-year students. The view over Ise Bay [Ago Bay?] was beautiful.

The camp gave me a strong motivation to go on studying English in the future. I will never forget the time we shared.

YTi’s report

It was my second time at the English House. It was a year since I had been to the last one. Of course, we had a very happy time this year, too. The weather was very good, and also the cottages were beautiful. We were very comfortable and I felt the three days were too short.

Strange to say, the students at the event were different nationalities – Japanese, Chinese, Nepali – but we all talked to each other in English. That was very interesting.

Everybody did self-introductions at first, then, we played a game with balloons. We were meeting each other for the first time, and yet we played very happily together. Later, we had to cook the meals by ourselves, and we helped each other. That was an unforgettable experience.

Personally, I think I am more able than I was before to get into an English way of thinking when I speak English. I think I must go on working harder at my English skills. I will certainly do my best.

We won’t forget the pleasant and enjoyable time we had. Thank you very much

Short-term English House Report

For the three days from March 26 to 28, our group of people from different countries stayed together at a beautiful peninsula location called Kashikojima. It was a wonderful time, and I want to tell you something about it.

The guitar player in the picture is called Eric. He is a good teacher and also a good singer, although he only sings sad songs.

Over the three days we took turns at cooking, and this photo shows one example of what we managed to do. Looks delicious, doesn’t it?

So who wants more? Hands up! – See what I mean?

After dark on the second night, we had a campfire party on the beach. It was awesome.

Three days and two nights with likeable people and music, good cooks, delicious food, beautiful scenery and comfortable cottages. This was my first time to participate in the Short-term English house, and it was a very rich experience for me. If you like English, if you enjoy trips, and if you want to try something new in your college life, you should be there for next year’s event!
