Man Du La
THEME : All you have to do is to be generou

Very few females smoke in China, it is really bad behaviour for a woman to smoke. Girls don't smoke and they hardly ever like a man who smokes, because cigarettes can easily make you stink, and they contain nicotine which causes addiction. Girls are always trying to make men drop smoking. But in fact, men do know that tobacco is harmful to health and a drain on their money. Some of them want to stop, and have tried. I say that almost every girl tries to get her boyfriend to give up smoking, but, unfortunately, almost every one of them has failed.
I also once gave up in an attempt to change a woman. I put in several years of effort before I eventually realized how stupid it was of me to try. I forced her to learn computer skills, and to study English. I wanted her to become better in my kind of way. But she wasn't happy, and she was always arguing with me. "What kind of me do you want me to change into?" she asked. "I feel I'm just fine!" I also tried to get my friends to change. I told them they should come to school every day, and should study harder. I thought it was a kindness on my part. However, the consequence was, I was working on it for a decade, and I failed for a decade. What a fool I was for never realizing that you can't change people.
In my opinion, choosing a man or woman for your lifelong companion is just like choosing a kind of lifestyle. To put it simply, every person stands for one kind of lifestyle. For example, if you are a woman and you choose a man who loves alcoholic drinks, that means the life you live with him will also become more connected with alcohol: with his drunken smells and his drunken friends. You have to accept this; don't think you can ever make him drop alcohol. Your efforts will definitely end in failure if you think you can change him to the way you want. Remember, to love a person is to love everything in her/him. Whether it's good or bad, all you have to do is to be generous.

Sakiko Shirai
THEME : How to handle 1000 people

Hello, everyone. My name is Sakiko. I am a student at Yokkaichi University, a management student. I am studying business administration. Every weekend I do a part-time job at a restaurant. 1000 customers come to the restaurant at busy times. Can we handle such a lot of customers? I have confidence. Yes we can! We just have to share the work. I'm going to talk about work sharing.
Think about it. Just enjoying our own work doesn't satisfy our customers. Our purpose is to make a profit, not to enjoy working. We each have our part in the whole of the work. One part is easy to do, so we can repeat the same action. Efficiency rises greatly.
I am going to explain about work sharing. Suppose, first, a customer comes to our restaurant. There's a person in charge of guiding them to the table. The customer sits down. We bring a glass of water. There is a person in charge of water serving. The customer has to decide what to order. There is a person in charge of bringing the menu. And there is a person to serve the food. The customer finishes eating, and we take the money. There is a cashier. And last, we clean the table again. There is a person in charge of cleaning up. Now we can wait for the next customer.
The person who serves food should focus only on serving. I really think the efficiency will go up that way. But is serving food the only job for the server to do? The answer is yes.
If we share work out, we always have to repeat, and repeat. If we start checking other things, and helping with other jobs, work sharing goes wrong. The only thing we need to do is to concentrate on our own roles.
I am a beginner at the restaurant, and bringing water is beginner's work. So I always bring water to the tables. I feel I want to use a cash register. I want to be a cashier. I want to take the money from the customers, because that is the final end of the work. I feel the cashier's work is more important than bringing water. Bringing water is too easy, I think. One day, I actually tried doing another job. I took orders. Ordering is a different job, but I thought it wouldn't matter if the water was served later. But I was severely scolded by the customer.
That was a mistake. In work sharing, if I start comparing the value of jobs, my co-workers won't be able to trust me. We don't have to give a ranking to each part of the work. To put an extreme point on it, we have to move smoothly in serving the water in order to be sure that the paying moves smoothly at the end. We want to make a good profit, and for that we want to have our customers happy. So it isn't enough if only one part goes well, because unity is more important.
Next weekend, and the next, and the next, we can handle 1000 people with smooth work sharing.
Thank you.

Wang Jinrong
THEME : Your happiness

Hello, everybody. My name is Wang Jinrong.
I come from China. Today I want to speak to you all about my happiness.
As a child, all you need is good food and drink, and nothing to worry about, and then you feel very happy. But as you slowly grow up, the happiness you are after suddenly changes.
Nobody should think they know what is going to happen in the future, because everything in your life changes. I never thought I could come to Japan, or study in Yokkaichi University. Even now, I haven't met everyone I see here, standing on this stage. I want to treasure everything about this moment.
People say you only treasure something when you lose it. I am always regretting things. But regretting things helps me grow up little by little. Sometimes real life is tough. So I want to treasure everything about each day.
When I was studying in my Chinese university, I really liked a boy. He was my classmate. He was very quiet and didn't talk so much. But he was very humorous when we were together. He wasn't handsome, but he was very manly. I felt very secure when I was with him. We liked each other. It was a pity that I unexpectedly chose to come and study in Japan. I had to give up my true love and begin a life just for me over here. I don't want to forget anything because he was my first love. It's a wonderful memory. I will always treasure it.
So I just want to say this to everybody. Hold on to your happiness. Treasure the things you have had in your life. Treasure your health, your family, your job and your friends.
Enjoy your life.

Thank you so much.

Naoki Furukawa
THEME : A perfect tool for communication

I'm going to speak about English, as a tool for communication, and I want to say that communication is important.
I went to Australia last year. While I was there, I had a lot of experiences. One of them was that I began to feel what a perfect tool English was, because I made many friends from various countries by communicating in English.
And I was able to understand many other people.

By the way, why do you think everyone says English is important? Why do we have to study English? In my opinion, English is just a tool for communication. That's why we should study English: for communication.
I'd like you to imagine that you can only speak Japanese. If we just speak Japanese, we can talk with only 100 million people. Don't you think that number is too small? If we can speak English, we can talk with more than 3 billion people. So we have the possibility of making friends in all counties.
Actually, the world population of Chinese speakers is larger than the world population of English speakers if we are talking about first-language speakers. But as a second language, English is used in almost all countries. And English is also spoken in business situations and so on.
In addition, English-speaking nations lead in a lot of areas like economics and politics, as well as in scientific fields such as the study of environmental problems.
Do you have an opinion about this? Do you agree with me?
If you agree with me, let's speak English!
Thank you.

Takaaki Iwatani
THEME : I am happy

Do you have any problems? I have. But I know I can learn from problems. Problems improve us.
I didn't have any problems at high school. I was happy every day, but I didn't develop myself very much.
I entered university. Then I became the English club captain. It was the start of a whole lot of annoyances.
I had many problems. For example, I didn't know what to do at the club and how to make the activities satisfying. I did many things but they didn't work. Things didn't go the way I had hoped.
But it was a turning point leading to change. I hadn't been positive about anything before and I had run away from things I didn't want to do. But now I had the club members to think about, so I couldn't run away. This was the first time that I couldn't run away.
After six months, I got a very happy club. From this, I learned two things.
First I found out I was much more patient than before. Problems changed me. Second, because of handling the problems, I think I'm happier each day now. Getting over the problems gave me the feeling of achievement.

I still have many problems but I can improve myself through having them. Now that I know that, I can continue to make efforts until I reach some solutions. So I enjoy campus life now.

Thank you.

Kikuko Muraki
THEME : Why I want to go to London

What country do you want to go to?
I want to go to many places. Now I want to go to London, because I'm interested in Sherlock Holmes.
Do you know Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes is the main character in the detective stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Sherlock Holmes lived in London.
I want to see the Sherlock Holmes Museum.
In the museum, you can see his room and his stuff, his deer stalker - a kind of hat -, his magnifying glass, his pipe, his violin and laboratory equipment.
Why do they exist, even though it's a fiction?
The museum was built for the millions of his fans in the world.

Because of the museum, London is attractive to me.
So I really want to go to London.
Thank you.

Eri Tsuji
THEME : My best friend

I have a best friend. She is a "tortoise," and I am a "hare." Do you know what I mean? I don't expect you do. Do you know the story of "The Hare and the Tortoise"?
This story is about a Hare that had fine red eyes and could bound off powerfully, and a Tortoise that walked very slowly. One day, they ran a race to the top of the hill, to prove which of them was better as a runner. The Hare ran off at full speed at first, but then stopped and made fun of the Tortoise by taking a nap. But when the Hare woke up again, the Tortoise was already at the top of the hill. The Tortoise held his fingers up at the Hare and made a great "V" sign. Actually, there is also a sequel to this story. Do you know it?

The Hare was beaten by the Tortoise, but next day they raced again, and this time the Hare won. The Hare made a "V" sign at the Tortoise. But to the Hare's surprise, the Tortoise made a "V" sign back and requested another return race. This time the Tortoise suggested a race in the sea, because the Hare was no good at swimming. The Hare was taken aback. Then the Hare asked why the Tortoise had made a "V" sign in spite of losing, and the Tortoise answered that it was because he had run faster than in the first race. The Tortoise wasn't competing against a rival. His goal was always to perform at his best.
People don't need to have the same strengths. Instead of competing in the same things, it is more helpful to be able to display different abilities. The Tortoise understood this and his composure was too much for the Hare, who finally stopped competing. He became friends with the Tortoise, and the two of them were much happier.
When I read this story, I recalled my best friend who was also my rival. She had had a dream to be an English teacher, while my dream was to be a nurse. But in high school we took the same classes. My score was always below hers. I couldn't reach her level. She simply did her best, and always said that I didn't need to worry about things. If I took everything easy, I could do it. My best friend was a Tortoise and I was a Hare. I like her very much. We're still good friends.
Thank you.

Kana Hibino
THEME : Nursing and communications

Hello. My name is Kana Hibino. I'm a nursing university student. I want to talk about nursing. I think three abilities are important for nursing. They are observation, judgment and technique, because nursing is an occupation that is concerned with people's lives. But the same three things are also important in daily life. For example, they are required in sports. The best athletes have these abilities. So let me talk about these three things, observation, judgment and technique.

Observation is information collecting. We have our senses, so we should use them to notice the changes in things. And we should keep our senses sharp.

Judgment needs a base in daily experiences. We can get this by having a wealth of experiences in our lives. If we always think a lot, I think we will naturally make good choices.

Technique requires plenty of training. We mustn't be afraid of mistakes; but we shouldn't repeat the same mistakes.

I want to be a nurse who has these three abilities. And I want to be a nurse who is needed by people. So just now I am spending my daily life working to reach these goals.
How about sharing this way of thinking, and helping to spread it?

Thank you.
