The ESL English House

I was very happy in the ESL English House. I had a very good time with the teachers and students. We cooked meals by ourselves. Eric and Dan cooked chili beans and roasted chicken wings for us. They were delicious. I am not good at cooking, but I did my best, too.
I was surprised when I heard Shoko speaking English so well. I was envious of her English. I will try to speak English a lot at school with Shoko. Please help me with my English. Thank you very much.
As well as cooking meals together, we also sang songs together. Eric played guitar for us. We also played games together. My English is not very good now, but this experience gave me a lot of confidence in my English. I will join in English House again next year.
Thanks to Shoko, Mr. Dykes, Eric and Dan.

Short-term English House 2011
Akemi

It was my first participation in this event, and I did not have much confidence in my command of English. But I took part all the same, and it was very good.
One thing that was fun was being in a group for preparing and cooking a meal. First we had to think “What is the menu?” and then “What about the ingredients?” and “How to make it?” and “How can we do it most efficiently?” When we thought about it together and did it the way we thought and not the way we were told, it was possible. All the things we cooked were delicious, and I was impressed with this first meal we made.
The next thing we had to plan for was what to do at the campfire. Again, we had to plan it in our group. What should we do? I gave a lot of opinions. I found that I made friends with everybody by talking together and it was a very valuable time. The performances by other groups were a lot of fun, too. It was very warm by the campfire on the pitch-black beach, and I felt happy.
I want to be able to understand quiz questions in English, so I need to acquire more of a command of English. I find I can set myself challenges in English even while I’m enjoying myself.
I spent a very worthwhile time. Thank you for your support.

(Comments from the event questionnaire)

The food was good this year, especially the food from countries other than Japan.
I’d like also to make a video time if possible. It could be some DVD about various countries’ culture. Then have everyone talk about it together in English. In the ESL
event of 2009, I also thought the cooking lesson was good.
In the training, if possible, people should keep their mind on using English. This time, we had a lot of people and we divided into two groups for some activities. I’m just wondering about activities to let the two groups stay together even though one cottage is a little small for so many people.
Anyway, I hope this event gets better and better, so that people can enjoy it and improve their English skill.

Impression of English conversation camp
Katusmi

I had expectations for the English conversation training camp. I was hoping for systematic concentration and hard study. However, the training camp was not the style I had hoped for. The method of learning English conversation through playing is understandable, but it is not one that suits my style.

Takaaki

I went to the Short-term English House from March 28-30, 2011.
This was my fourth time, and I think it is a very good lodge event. For example, first I can make friends, and I can have a good time listening to native speakers talking English. Second, I feel it is important for my English to speak with the international students. In the world today, English is a common language. Anyway, I was happy to have this good experience.
Thank you to the organizing staff.

I spent a really happy time at the ESL Short-term English House last month! At first I
was a little nervous, because it was my first time to attend this event, but soon I felt more comfortable as I started making new friends. The participants were from
different countries, so it was so interesting to communicate with them in English. Everyone was friendly and active!
We cooked our meals for ourselves during the whole event, and Mr. Bray and other friends also cooked some special food from different countries. I really enjoyed that! It was delicious and it gave us the chance to learn about different food cultures from different countries.
On the second evening we had an exciting campfire. I was glad because I love the sea, and we held the campfire just near the shore. We all gathered together around the fire and played games or guessed the puzzles we had prepared. Everybody was
so moved by the sight of the beautiful night stars. I was thrilled too.
I will never forget this special English event! I was soooooooo pleased to have this chance to improve my English by speaking it. It really is ten times better to use a language than to study it in a book! I am looking forward to next year's SHORT TERM ENGLISH HOUSE. Thanks everybody!

I Really Enjoyed the Training Camp
Shengjun

I really enjoyed the training camp these three days. I had a lot of fun meeting up
with new faces and making new friends.
At first, I found that most of the people already knew each other from before the training camp, and that made me a little nervous, even before getting to the hotel. I thought that maybe I had made a wrong decision in joining this trip.
But when we arrived at the hotel, we were put into groups for the duration of the training camp, and we were expected to do a lot of tasks in these groups. So that made me feel much better because it meant that I wouldn’t be left on my own for the three days.
In fact there was no need to be worried about having no friends on this trip. In my case, even though I didn’t know most of the people taking part, I found that we
soon became friends.
If you want to make new friends too, why not come along next year. I can promise you that you’ll have good fun and make new friends. Don’t be shy!!

Flame of hope
Mario

The campfire not only lights up the beginning of this story, but has also ignited my desire to learn English.
This was my first time ever to take part in a campfire, and I feel that learning English
is another form of lighting a fire. It has also lit a fire in my heart. I have been trying to use that fire to light up my motivation for learning English.
Before my exposure to the ESL, English was a subject I especially hated, so I certainly didn’t like English teachers. However, through some of the activities in the ESL, especially the collective life, I picked up a strong interest in English and realized the importance of it. Accordingly, I bought a lot of books about English. I hope that in about two years, through my own efforts, I can reach a good level of daily communication ability in English. I am particularly looking forward to seeing how I will be after two years. Do you want to see the future "me"?

I was afraid at the thought of this short-term English House at first, because I am not so good at English. I had a bad foreboding, and my forecast came true!
Everyone could speak English, and I could not follow the conversation. But the senior students and the teachers helped me, and in the end I felt happy and thankful.

Short-term English House Report
Yuuna

In studying English so far, I’ve been learning grammar and vocabulary by heart, and I’ve been practicing hearing with the support of CDs. This training camp was different, and it was a valuable experience for me.

Actually, I found it difficult to hear and understand the spoken English. Conversation in English is quite different from studying English at a desk.
I noticed that complete sentences are not required in conversation. Therefore I was able to begin speaking English even if my usage was slightly different from standard.
Through taking part in this training camp, I picked up the courage to face English conversation.
It was fun, too. I enjoyed the Outside Activity events, especially Exploring in Nature and the skits and charades on the beach.
I found I was able to speak English naturally when playing games like this with everyone. Moreover, I was able to practice English actively when our team was planning for the skit.
I got a lot of experience and made many friends in the three days. At the same time, I also encountered a lot of challenges for the future.
I want to learn English more positively from now on.
This camp left me some wonderful memories.

Short-term English House Report
Rina

The English training camp was very good for me. Up to now, I had not been very conscious of how few chances there are to practice speaking English.
When I was in junior high school I found that I hated English classes, and so I didn’t want to study English. However, my bad feelings about English have weakened thanks to the easy time I had speaking in English at the training camp.
I made up my mind to study English by selecting some English classes in the future.

Firstly, I'd like to thank all the organisers for organising the program. This was a very new and memorable experience for me.
I think these three days were very useful for people who want to use and upgrade their English language. All the participants tried very hard in their English. I think the period was a little bit short for a trip or program like this. It's better to have at least more than a week.
We enjoyed ourselves a lot, had great fun and gained a variety of knowledge from having participants from different countries. I’m looking forward to having more programs like this in future days, too.

I enjoyed the ESL Short-term English House that was held from March 28 to 30, 2011.
On the first evening, we cooked Nepali and Japanese curry. On the second night, I stayed up late, and everyone was talking about ghosts. On the third day, I was tired out. All of the cooking was hard work for everyone.
I made friends with everyone at the training camp, and I studied English there. I also found that it was a good opportunity to be in close contact with nature.
This training camp taught me a lot of things.

I hope to take part in the next ESL camp, as well.

The English Camp
Qiulan

It was the second time for me to participate in the English camp. In the two years since my first English camp, I had come to miss the sweet cottages a little へへ. This time there were a lot more participants, and some of us have participated several times. In the camp we tried to use English, even when we made jokes, played games, or sang songs…… it brought us a little English-world in Japan. However we all had fun with this. For some people having fun may have been their main reason for using English, others probably found that their English-speaking ability had improved, while some, maybe, just made a lot of friends……

I want to thank everybody for this wonderful trip to end off my university life.
Although it was my first time to join in the ESL Short-term English House, I was able to enjoy it right away because I had the courage to face up to the challenge of communicating about things with everybody in English. I know my English is not good enough. But this was a chance that will help me study English again from the beginning.
We spent the short three days together cooking and washing, singing songs and playing games, and thinking and talking every day about English. At the beginning, we were able to take a walk along the sea in nice weather. My favourite activity was the “Treasure Hunt”, because this game makes us use English more quickly and this shows up for us in good teamwork. I am going to remember the good time we had forever.
Let me finish by saying that I am glad to have made new friends in the camp. It was a wonderful time!!

This English camp was great fun and very good. The cottages that we stayed at had a very good view.
We made all our own meals while staying in the cottages. The first night, my group made Nepali curry and pickles. While cooking, we asked Ashok T. the best method for making these dishes. As there were more than 30 people participating it was hard for the four of us to do the cooking, but it was fun making the meal amid cries of “Ooh Ooh!”
After dinner, we exchanged ideas for a program to present at the campfire the following night.
After dinner on the next day, we performed at the campfire on the beach. We put ourselves into high spirits with quizzes and games under a star-filled sky. Our group did a short drama.
Even after coming back to the cottage, we sat up and talked about various things, forgetting the drawing on of night.
It was a pity that we didn’t take a bath in the hot spring. I wanted a little more free time to spare. But it was a very happy three days.
 Thank you, everybody!!

The hotel has the highest location in the area, and is enclosed by greenery and by the sea.
You can find a lot of different kinds of swimming creatures if you go down to the sea, and a lot of wild birds flying about in the forest. The scenery here makes a wonderful spectacle.
Back in the cottage, I was able to enjoy some relaxation time.

This hotel has a long stretch of beautiful garden. I actually walked it with my friends. We followed a small river, and came to a little ornamental cottage. A lot of vigorous trees were planted around it.
From the hotel, we can also look out over the sea. But it is only in the hotel grounds that we get to look at this wonderful garden.

Ashok
In my view, this hotel is located in a good place. Around the hotel, there is a lot of green scenery and there are plenty of herbal plants. A second point to be made is that the hotel is not just for business people. There are cottages too, which are more intimate and make people feel at home. This place is very well suited for family stays, I think.
There is only one problem: transportation. There is no local means of transport to get you to or from the hotel.

My rating for this hotel is:****
